Types of Cheilitis
To what we commonly call pellejitos, or when we form a boquera, the medical term is cheilitis. Cheilos means "lips" in Latin, and -ITIS is the suffix that applies to everything that is "inflammation of."
There are different types of Cheilitis, below you will find a description of each.
Angular cheilitis: is what is known as "boqueras", a small fissure at the corner of the lip.
Exfoliative or desquamative cheilitis: the pellejitos are shed, and when they are bloomed, they can be caused by exposure to the sun or cold, by some habit such as biting, breathing through the mouth or lack of vitamins. It is also associated with different syndromes and infections. Be careful because when it becomes chronic, they can be carcinogenic.
Cracked cheilitis: Similar to the previous one only that in this occasion, when the pellejitos are lost they are created cracks or grooves that they bleed.
Erosive cheilitis: It is characterized by a unique erosion, a loss of oval-shaped skin, bright red, which hurts when touched. It is also susceptible to being carcinogenic.
Glandular cheilitis: There are different types, and they affect the salivary glands located in the vermilion of the lip.
Cheilitis caused by exogenous agents: Caused by medication, allergies to cosmetics, foods or candies, toothpaste, sunlight, poisonings, extreme temperatures, etc...
